Neighbors Caring for Neighbors...Body, Mind and Spirit"

Healthy Neighbors – September Website Article

Hello Healthy Neighbors!  We have been thinking of you and hope you have been having an enjoyable summer.  It seems hard to believe that Labor Day will soon be upon us and, with it, the return to school and all kinds of Fall activities.

As you plan for those upcoming activities, remember to make opportunities to eat right and exercise.  When you are booking your calendar with extracurricular activities your family might be in, set aside some time to walk or perform another exercise.  It may be advantageous to go to pick up a child early from sports practice, and use the extra time to walk around the building, track or parking lot.  When they are done, you will be too.  Is it possible to set your alarm 30 minutes earlier in the morning in order to have some uninterrupted exercise time?  Can you delay returning home after work in order to walk or stop at your favorite spot to exercise?  Having time to exercise before or after the work day can provide for improved physical and mental health.

Are you continuing to drink all the water you need?  Make sure you are following the prescribed eating program to keep you healthy and avoid excess weight gain.  As you prepare a menu for the family, keep in mind the abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables that are in season right now.  If you can, prepare these foods ahead of time (maybe when packing a youngster’s lunch) and put in bags or containers to be used for a healthy after- school or after-work snack.

Finally, remember to fill your thoughts with positive reminders of your goals.  You have made progress with your healthy lifestyle.  Celebrate it!  Avoid negative thinking and be kind to yourself.

The next Healthy Neighbors session will begin Tuesday, September 7 at 6 p.m.  The deadline to register is Sept. 1, so encourage friends or family to consider this lifestyle change program and call Cheryl at 489-8116 for more information.
