HEALTHY NEIGHBORS HEALTH NEIGHBORS MARCH 2004 GRADUATING CLASS The Healthy Neighbors Program is a 12-week lifestyle change program designed for adults in the St. Josephs service area. Our first session began on January 12 and ended with graduation night on March 29, 2004. The goal of the program was to reduce the occurrence of negative consequences for overweight, obesity and sedentary lifestyles. Modeled after the Hearts and Parks Program from the National Institutes of Health, the group focused on lifestyle changes that could result in weight loss and increased physical activity. Each 2-hour class consisted of an educational program as well as an opportunity to exercise with other adults in the class. A pre- and post-assessment was performed, which measured health knowledge and attitude. Body measurements, as well as weight and body mass index calculations, were offered at monthly intervals. Our Healthy Neighbors Class was made up of 18 adults from the communities of Elroy, LaFarge and Hillsboro. The average attendance was 13 people on a weekly basis. We enjoyed the opportunity to meet, learn and exercise together. The group support was key to the success of the individuals who participated. All together, the group of 18 participants decreased their body mass index by 23 points and lost in excess of 115 pounds and 71 inches. This averages 6.4 pounds and 3.9 inches per participant. Everyone saw an improvement in at least one area. Most importantly, many participants were able to identify changes to their lifestyles that they felt could be permanent. These included regular exercise, increase in water consumption, or portion and food choice changes to improve health. St. Josephs wants to congratulate all the Healthy Neighbors graduates, and wishes them continued success! Watch this website for program announcements and updates.
